National Lies: The Truth About American Values by Charles Churchyard presents an original and comprehensive theory that explains American values: (1) how they produced this nation’s stupendous power and prosperity and (2) why the fundamental contradiction which they contain is the source of present-day discontent. In the course of its exposition, National Lies answers numerous questions about specific phenomena that seem puzzling and at times even perverse. The following are some examples (with indications of the chapters in which they appear):

National Lies constructs a cumulative chain of argument, with conclusions reached in earlier sections forming the basis of later discussion and analysis. The reader is therefore advised not to skip ahead to topics of special interest. Before reading about American religion (p. 107-117), for example, one first needs to understand the concept of panglossianism (p. 85-90).
